Valentine’s Day, Food Allergies, and Special Diets
Valentine’s Day, along with every other holiday can be hard enough without food allergies or a special diet, so here are some tips to get you through.
Shortbread Cookies: Download our free Kit Card and make shortbread cookies. Rather than use Christmas decorations (like the card) make a pink glaze instead. Use heart cookie cutters and now you have an awesome V-Day treat.
Torrie & Howard Candies: Order some of these to use as a small way to show someone you care. Be sure to get cherry or pomegranate flavors which have red wrappers.
Wholesome Sweeteners (Previously Surf Sweets) Heart Candy: These are gluten free, top 8 free, vegan, and organic. You can get these at many specialty stores, and amazon.
No Whey Chocolates: They have seasonal treats available now, and if you call, you may be able to get free shipping.
Enjoy Life Foods: Everything from enjoy life is Top 8 Free and more. You can take their soft baked cookies and use a small heart cookie cuter to turn cookie rounds into V-Day hearts.
Zego Snacks: Pick up the strawberry or raspberry Zego bars and like the tip above, use a small heart shaped cookie cutter to show some love to someone special. Vanilla heart yogurt for breakfast is sure to make someone smile.
Make These Quick Snacks:
Pictured are Made Good Crispy Rice Bars topped with Surf Sweets Heart Gummies. I made a quick Vanilla Glaze to use as glue. For the glaze, I used a few Tablespoons of Organic Powdered Sugar and added a small amount of water until it was a glue-like consistency. The kids dipped the gummies in the glue, and stuck them on to the crispy treats.
The biggest reason I shared this treat with you: we made them in FIVE minutes. I know how busy life gets, so I wanted to make something that someone short on time can enjoy.
Do Things Your Way
Maybe food isn’t the best option for you. There are so many other ways to show love on V-Day that don’t involve food. LEGO bricks can be formed into the shape of a heart. Paper crafts and origami are also a great option. If you live near a beach, draw hearts in the sand, take pictures, and make your own custom cards. With a little creativity, the options are limitless on how to show some care and love.
Don’t Forget the Health Factor
It’s easy to get caught up in the sweets on Valentine’s Day, but don’t forget, there are other food groups to choose from. Smoothies and juices can include beets, goji berries, raspberries, and strawberries for a pink tint. Pink lady apples also make a great pink toned applesauce. If you want a fun dinner, consider homemade pizza, and form the dough into the shape of a heart. To make this easier, Wilton sells a heart shaped cake pan you can purchase to make your shaping much easier.
No matter how you chose to spend Valentine’s Day, make sure it’s stress free and full of love.

Infographic: Coconut for Health
I really enjoy infographics, and when I find a good one, I like to share. This one is about the benefits of coconut. If you’re allergic to corn, Tropical Traditions has been deemed safe for you. For the rest of you, places like Costco has great deals on organic coconut products. That’s another thing. If you plan on using coconut oil on your skin, consider organic products. Anytime you’re planning on using something for skincare, really consider the ingredients and how they’re sourced.
Allergy Friendly Charcoal Gummy Bears – Vegan, Gluten Free, Corn Free
This was such a HUGE win. If you’re allergic to just about everything, these are the gummy bears for you. However, I have to say this: if you can have things like gelatin, or something like Krysten’s Kitchen Green Gummy Bears, please please please use a traditional recipe. These gummy bears, as awesome as the are, take some getting use to. They don’t behave the way you may be use to… they are a little on the chewy side… they’re different, and greatly loved.

Allergy Free Comforting Chicken & Rice
This dish came together as one of those, “use what’s in the fridge” types of meals. I only used a small amount of asparagus since around here, it’s considered a bad word. I’m working on that by the way, lol. Here’s the best part though: after I had everything ready, I asked everyone to sample, and they were just so pleased. The Papa said that it’s not a dish that knocks you off your feet with flavor, but at the same time, it’s just so comforting to eat. In fact, he told me several times that evening that “Dinner was just so comforting. We should have that again soon.” Coming from him, and knowing that asparagus was involved, it was quite the compliment. So, from our kitchen to yours, here’s a comforting dish for the family to enjoy.

Grain Free, Allergy Friendly, Sweet & Sour Pork
I have been having SO much fun experimenting with the Cascadian Farms frozen cauliflower rice product. I think it’s been out for a while, but only newly available in our area. Whole Foods also has a similar product, however, it’s made in a shared facility, and isn’t safe for Kid Two. This new product though, it’s very interesting! When we make cauliflower rice at home, there’s a much more organic texture about it. The frozen package seems to have somewhat uniform square pieces of cauliflower.
I was working on a different project when this idea came to me – an allergy friendly sweet and sour pork. First, I thought I would about it in the tradition way, then I reminded myself of how much I love to go about things totally different. I have yet to see a clean, grain free, version of sweet and sour pork, and set out to make that a reality. When I made it, I was afraid I had gone a bit too far and no one would like it… They ate it all in one go. I think it’s safe to say this is a delicious recipe 🙂

Allergy Free, Vegan, Brussels Sprouts Lunch & Giveaway
As you may know, we teamed up with Bentology to bring you a delicious stuffed pork recipe. Well, there’s this one as well, as we didn’t want our vegan readers to be left out. As I mentioned before, I really like that this is a bento-style product. In addition to making this recipe for our vegan eaters, I thought it would be great since they work hard to encourage people to eat healthy. For those of you that are brussels sprouts avoiders, I can personally guarantee that The Papa was happy with this meal. Focus on the word happy. He hates brussels sprouts.
