LEGO Review – 40139 Limited Edition Gingerbread House (& MOC)

So, as you can see, I was greedy. I got 2 🙂 I started by following some of the framing instructions. I didn’t want to deviate too far from the original house in that regard, mainly because of the limited number of pieces I was dealing with. From there, I had to add some pieces from our collection. Mainly, I had to being in some 6×8 plates for the base since the original is rounded on all 4 corners. I used the extra rounded ones for the roof.

Once I had the base in place, I did the windows with a little difference from the original, and also had to pull out the last bit of mason bricks that I had in this colour to fill it out properly. Once the building was complete, it was on to the roof. I followed the original design, but added the rounded pieces leftover from the base. I also added extra icicles. For the top with cupcake swirls, I added extras of those as well. You’ll notice that the roof is extended past the edge of the house. There’s an extra 6 studs on the roof, and I love the way it turned out.

Finally, there was the chimney and decorations. I felt that 2 ice cream pieces looked too wimpy, so I went a little over board. What can I say? I love ice cream. For the outside decorations, I only added a few printed cookies from our collection, and extra green ice creams as well as orange-yellow ones.

I think I am willing to give up a few of my toes in exchange for a modular sized gingerbread house. Oh how amazing that would be…

The front view. You can’t see it in this image, but there’s a really nice stain glass effect on the inside.

40124 Winter Fun

LOVE IT! It’s cute, it’s small, it’s everything that expresses the joy of snow… The mini snowman was just right for the set, and I like it better than the big snowman. I will admit, it lacks details like the large one, but, I don’t know what it is about it. The brick facade on the building is lovely, and I wouldn’t mind building out the house a bit more. It’s just so quaint. I will say that the snow on top could use a little work. It’s a bit too flat for my liking. I love that I get a little Christmas tree, but I felt that the wreath on the door was unnecessary. Maybe because it’s strangely put together? I’m not sure. Overall, I would rate this set a 8/10. Yes, it’s up there with the big sets only because of how well put together it is.

40125 Santa’s Arrival

Like 40124, I just love this set. The details are all there. The beautiful chair that swivels, the cookies, the fireplace, the tree. Could I ask for anything else? My only complaint with the set would be the “stockings” hanging over the fireplace. I know this sounds strange, but I would have preferred to see LEGO create a custom piece for this. It’s something that could be used in other holiday sets, so it would pay for itself. And considering they made a mould for the hotdog guy, this is so worth it. There’s just something so unnatural about the L piece being a hanging stocking. From a distance, it’s not such a big deal. However, up close. eh. Also, I don’t know that I needed the cat. I could see a little kid loving the cat. Maybe it’s because I’m allergic to them? Like 40124, the wreath wasn’t too necessary for me to like the set. Overall, I would give this set a high rating because it’s small and quick, yet detailed and full of joy.

Time For Christmas Reviews!

40093-1 Large Snowman

The SNOT (Stud Not On Top) building techniques used on this set were nice. I also really liked how the scarf comes together. As I was building, I was wondering why there was a red piece in what seemed to be a random place, then it hit me. Overall however, I wasn’t in love with this set. I actually preferred the look of the mini snowman in 40124. Truth be told, I bought this set because I got the reindeer, and they just seemed like a pair. I think this would be a great build for a little kid, and I must say, it makes an excellent addition to Christmas and winter-land displays.

40092-1 Large Reindeer

This reindeer is simply cute. There’s a hidden cross piece that allows it to hold the present, and well, it’s just cute. The antlers, the feet, I just love this little thing. What more can I say? It’s great to add to your winter and Christmas displays, and people of all ages will enjoy this one. In fact, I wouldn’t mind making another one from spare parts so the extra present isn’t just sitting around. I will say however, the party hat seemed a bit out of place for me.
